MORE than 1,500 schoolchildren are helping a superhero clean up the planet.
Youngsters from primary schools across Sunderland are joining caped crusader Eco Ranger for a nine-day event at Rainton Meadows, near Houghton-le-Spring.
Those taking part will be invited to tackle a range of interactive challenges ranging from energy efficiency, recycling and sustainability, to dealing with chemical pollution and water conservation.
The event, which is organised by Sunderland City Council, Northumbrian Water Environmental Trust and Durham Wildlife Trust, was launched yesterday, on World Environment Day.
Bob Bowman, director of city health and housing, said: "Eco Rangers is all about encouraging youngsters to look after their environment and getting the message over to them in a fun and informative way.
"Saving the planet may be a bit of a tall order, but each and every one of us can play our part by doing simple things like picking up litter and recycling."
