PENSIONER Jean Watson hopes her double bed-sized quilt will help spread a little happiness and warmth.

Quilter Mrs Watson has been at work on her grand design for the past 18 months. Thousands of stitches have gone into the bed cover.

Both it and quilts and patchwork fashioned by a group of fellow enthusiasts are going to be raffled to raise funds for Saltburn in Bloom - the annual effort to make the resort as pretty as a picture through flower power.

The 20 women, who meet every Tuesday to work in Mrs Watson's Marine Parade flat, hope their combined efforts will raise £2,000 to help meet the cost of plants, flower tubs and baskets, and the water bill to keep the blooms in peak condition. As for her quilt design, Mrs Watson said: "It just evolved.''

The raffle is being held at Saltburn Community Centre on Saturday, June 23.
