Middlesbrough striker Andy Campbell is a target for new Crystal Palace boss Steve Bruce.

The 22-year-old handed in a transfer request on Thursday and having had Campbell under his wing at Sheffield United and failed in two attempts to bring him to Huddersfield last season, Bruce knows all about the Teessider.

The newly installed Selhurst Park supremo is keen to make Campbell his first signing and will have to pay around £2million to get his man.

Steve McClaren is expected to take over the Riverside reins on Monday and it's unlikely he'll stand in Campbell's way, especially with Derby striker Malcolm Christie at the top of his shopping list.

Meanwhile, wantaway Aston Villa star Gareth Southgate today said he would not be rushed into a switch to Middlesbrough.

The transfer-listed England defender is a top target for incoming Boro boss Steve McLaren.

But with Liverpool and Tottenham also interested in him the £8 million-rated star is prepared to play a waiting game before deciding where his future lies.

Southgate, 30, heads off for a family holiday this weekend and is prepared to put his move away from Villa Park temporarily on hold.

He said: "I'm not worried about the situation. I've waited that long already.

"The fact nothing has been sorted out yet won't spoil my summer."
