A DARLINGTON schoolgirl will be the first recipient of a new business-sponsored scholarship, which has come about through a partnership between Polam Hall school and the Simon Bailes Peugeot dealership.

Gemma Lyne, aged 11, is currently a pupil at Rise Carr primary school. She will enter year seven at Polam Hall school in the autumn term. She came top of all the internal and external entrants for the scholarship and has taken part in courses for gifted children in the past.

The scheme was announced last year. Sponsorships will be awarded to five girls over a nine-year period.

It is the first business-sponsored scholarship at Polam Hall.

Mr Simon Bailes, managing director of the Northallerton and Guisborough-based dealership, said: "The sponsorship is aimed at developing young people in the community, allowing five girls the opportunity to study at Polam Hall.

"I am delighted that Gemma has been awarded this and am confident she will take every advantage of this excellent opportunity to study."

Polam Hall headmistress, Mrs Helen Hamilton, said: "The scholarship is an excellent opportunity for local girls to enjoy the benefits of an independent, single sex school. Hopefully, this will make a real difference to them in the future."
