A CHARITY says its presence in a town is under threat because people think its shop has closed.

The Imperial Cancer Research Fund shop, on Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, has seen support plummet since to let signs went up marking the end of its lease.

While the current premises are no longer viable, its volunteers hope charity bosses will find another site in the town.

But they fear its fate will be sealed unless more helpers and donations are forthcoming.

Area retail manager Ann Thompson said: "Since it has been up for let, the once-thriving shop has seen a nose-dive in general support.

"It's on the market, but it could still go on for another three years. We would like to remind people that we're still trading and continuing to fund raise, and we are always in need of good quality second-hand clothing, jewellery, linen, toys, bric-a-brac and household items.

"We're still actively recruiting, and there is always so much to do in the shop."

In its 17 years of operation, the store has raised more than £850,000, thanks to strong support from the community.

But Kevin Hunter, the charity's regional mobile manager, said times have drastically changed. "We are very near the knuckle," he said.

"The overheads are quite high in this building and since the original manager left, we've had problems replacing him."

The shop's troubles began when Linthorpe Road ceased to be a main thoroughfare.

Mrs Thompson said: "Because people are shopping at the other end of town, we are not getting the same footfall.

"They moved all the bus stops round the corner, whereas buses used to stop outside the shop."

She said the shop's ability to win back people's support was vital to its future.

"I'm sure the charity will be looking at its popularity when deciding whether to keep a shop in Middlesbrough," she said.

"I think there needs to be a voice for cancer research in the town."
