ESTATE residents were put behind bars yesterday by their local MP.
Ashok Kumar, Labour MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, was joined by the police to turn the key in a mock cell to raise sponsorship for a play park for children, on the New Skelton estate.
Members of the residents' association were locked up in the meeting hall at Langbaurgh Court, and will stay behind bars until midday on Sunday.
Mr Kumar said: "It may seem like locking local people in a New Skelton version of the Big Brother House, but this is for a serious cause.
"I know that with parental concern about the safety of children, there is a big demand for more local play parks where children can play within both earshot and eyeshot of their parents.
"I hope the imprisonment exercise will bring about a new play park in New Skelton."
