POLICE are appealing for information on an elderly conman who duped two fellow pensioners into parting with cash.

The victims, a 92-year-old man and a man in his 70s, reported being approached by a man in his 60s on market days in Guisborough, east Cleveland.

He purported to know them, and seemed to know the area in which they live. He engaged them in friendly conversation before asking them to lend him money, saying he had lost his pension book and didn't have sufficient money for groceries.

The man promised to pay them back, but never did. He is described as 5ft 6in, thin build, clean shaven and wearing glasses. He was dressed in a collar and tie and flat cap.

Last night, PC Nick Brecon warned other pensioners to be on their guard.

"The two gentlemen may not have been the only victims of this conman and I would warn anyone approached by him not to hand over cash," he said. "He clearly has no intention of ever returning their money."

Anyone with information can contact PC Brecon between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, on (01642) 302026.
