A LEADING businessman has been banned from the roads for three years - after being caught over the limit on his 36th birthday.

Butcher Peter Fawcett, who runs a chain of outlets stretching from West Yorkshire to Northumberland, had spent Saturday, June 9, in a Nidderdale hotel, solicitor David Camidge told Harrogate magistrates.

Shortly after he left the hotel at noon in his BMW, he was stopped by police in Pateley Bridge for a routine check and a breath test showed he was more than twice the legal limit.

When Fawcett, of Lyons Road, Richmond, pleaded guilty to drink-driving Mr Camidge said he had not topped up his alcohol level before leaving the hotel.

His passenger who had drunk exactly the same amount, had been given a negative breath test.

Fawcett, who had a drink-drive conviction in October 1999 was banned from the roads for three years, fined £500 and ordered to pay £55 costs.

Mr Camidge said Fawcett, a married man with a seven-year-old daughter, employs 150 staff.
