DURHAM will have a day at the seaside in their C & G Trophy quarter-final - and they will not have to face Muthiah Muralitharan.

The match against Lancashire is to be played at Blackpool on July 25 because of a Robbie Williams concert at Old Trafford.

Although Muralitharan may be back in September, he finished his current stint with Lancashire in yesterday's C & G win against Sussex. They always knew that his commitments with Sri Lanka would cut short his season.

Although former Durham player John Wood scored 25 as a pinch-hitting opener to go with his three wickets, the Man of the Match award went to Andrew Flintoff, who followed his 65 not out by taking two for 19 in ten overs bowling into a gale. Glen Chapple missed the match through injury, but is likely to return in place of Mike Smethurst on Sunday, when Durham visit Old Trafford in the Norwich Union League.

Durham won their home match against the Red Rose men in the one-day league and also beat them at Liverpool in the Benson & Hedges Cup on May 1. Prior to that they hadn't beaten them since their very first match as a first-class county in 1992.

Lancashire felt playing at Liverpool took away their home advantage and they may feel the same about going to Blackpool.

With Durham members expected to swell the crowd towards the ground's capacity of 5,000, there should be quite an atmosphere for Durham's attempt to reach a cup semi-final for the first time.

The scan on Simon Brown's right knee has not revealed any serious damage and he could be fit for Sunday. But Durham are more likely to give another chance to the youngsters who did so well at Bristol on Wednesday, with Brown coming into contention for the championship match against Sussex starting at the Riverside on Wednesday.

* Man-of-the-match Gary Fellows and Craig White took part in a dazzling unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 169 as Yorkshire dashed to victory over Surrey by six wickets with 11 balls to spare in yesterday's resumed C & G Trophy clash.

The sparkling win gives Yorkshire a home quarter-final tie against Warwickshire on July 25.

Fellows ended unbeaten on 80 and White 73, their stand being a Yorkshire record in the competition for the fifth wicket - beating the 129 between White and Bradley Parker against Leicestershire at Grace Road in 1997.

When Wednesday's rain-hit play finally ended late in the evening, Yorkshire were 134 for four in 29 overs which meant they required a further 113 off 21 overs.

Yorkshire were then three runs to the good under the Duckworth-Lewis system and Fellows and White made sure they stayed well ahead of the rate yesterday, even though the rain never returned.

Spinner Saqlain Mushtaq was partnered for a while by Mark Butcher who was cut for four by the admirable Fellows and when White reached 40 it became his highest score of the season.

Saqlain turned out not to be the threat that Yorkshire had feared and each batsman cut him for three off consecutive balls before each also reached his 50 off consecutive deliveries from Ben Hollioake as the stand galloped into three figures in 19 overs.

Surrey became increasingly desperate as Fellows and White showed few signs of nerves and in the end it was no more than a stroll for Yorkshire.
