Two 'golden oldies' with a combined age of 132 years have teamed up in an attempt to revive the ailing fortunes of the Darlington Building Society NYSD League Premier Division side Bishop Auckland.

Keith Hopper, who has been chairman at Kingsway for 20 years lined up with Harry Smurthwaite in the recent game against Northallerton but the pair were unable to help their team to success.

"I am 68 and agreed with Harry to play. We hoped our long experience in the game would be of benefit but unfortunately the team lost," said Keith who started a long playing career with Shildon before joining Bishops in the early 50s.

He played professional with Crook Town and Craghead before returning to Kingsway and claims the game has changed out of all recognition, compared to what it was when he started out.

"There is not the same involvement and commitment nowadays and it is becoming increasingly difficult to run a club," bemoaned Keith.

Harry Smurthwaite, 64 also began with Shildon when they played in the mid-Durham Senior League. He joined Bishops in 1966 and has been there ever since.

"I am playing more regularly in the first team than Keith but he has agreed to help in whatever way he can and I wouldn't be surprised if the two of us line up together again before the end of the season," said Harry.
