Bedale Club Championship - Two rounds of 18 holes does not attract a great number of players for a major Club competitions, but 51 played in the competition which carries a prize for Best Nett known as the Kettlewell Trophy, as well as the honour of becoming club champion.

Although the first round was played in good weather, in the final 18 competitors had to cope with some occasional heavy rain.

The final decision on who is the Club Champion will have to wait, as a tie was the result and a further 18 holes will be played to identify the winner.

In the first round, the course record was broken by Andrew Gatenby, who scored an excellent 69.

Leading scores - Gross: 143 (71+72) Kevin Ward, (69+74) Andrew Gatenby, 147 (75+72) Simon Griffiths, 150 (76+74) Julian Beer.

Red Cross Cup No 13

A dull evening with occasional rain greeted competitors for this week's Tuesday evening Stableford competition, but scores were of a high standard in spite of the conditions.

Leading scores: 44 points Ray Marshall (17), 43 David Blades (12), 40 Andrew Gatenby (7), 39 Tony Stenson.

Lady Captain's Day

After the abandonment of the first attempt, the Lady Captain, Marion Wills, had an excellent day for her second attempt with the weather fine and the course in excellent condition.

The day started with an 18 hole Stableford competition and was followed with a six hole clutch competition, completed by target golf.

With 39 points, Gillian Petrie, playing off a five handicap, won the Captain's Prize. The Gross Prize, with 30 points, went to Julia Doughty.

Prize winners in the various divisions - Silver: 37 points Monica Christian (18) and Sue Waring (17) position decided on countback, 36 points Joan Sanderson (12).

Bronze 1: 36 points Dorothy Hill (22), 34 points Marilyn Dawson (22).

Bronze 2: 38 points Yvonne Beasley (29), 37 points Glenys Brown (32), 34 points Maggie Ritchie (30).

Club Championship

Julia Doughty's excellent form continued with two rounds of 74 and 84, making a total of 158 for the 36 holes and carry off the Gross Prize and became Lady Golfer of the year. In the parallel Nett Competition, Liz Stubbs was the best scorer with a 73 and 74, a total of 147 for two rounds, playing off a handicap of 17.

Daily Mail Foursomes

Julia Doughty and Mavis Burton, in the fifth round of this competition, managed a five and three victory on the home course against two ladies from Dewsbury Golf Club.

Harrogate and District Union

Two Union events in one day gave officers a very busy time as the events were at Otley and Oakdale Golf Clubs. However, no problems occurred and the competitions were played in fine weather, with both courses in excellent condition.

First Division Team Championship

This premier Union Team event is always a very tough competition as each individual must perform to the best of his ability.

The winning team, Otley A, with a score of 289 was: Martin Myers, David Parkinson and Andy Holmes who all returned 71s and Paul Glendenning completing with a 76, did it in fine style, claiming the trophy by eight clear shots.

Runners-up, Harrogate A's score was produced by Neil Fegan 70, Chris Longthorne 72, Tim Moorhouse 73 and Joe Buckley 82, returned a score of 297. Harrogate's Vice captain Neil Fegan, won the Best Gross prize with his score of 70.

Mixed Foursomes and Oakdale

Jubilee Trophy

The only mixed event in the Union calendar was played at the course of the provider of the trophy. The winners, with a score of 66, were J and W Marsh (Harrogate).

Other scores: 68 B and C Burton (Ripon City), 71 L and P Morris (Bedale), also J and M Eadington (Knaresborough), position decided on countback, 72 L and L Bradley (Knaresborough).

The Best Gross prize, with a score of 78, went to M Kent and P Simpson (Harrogate).

The winners of the Oakdale trophy were the Oakdale team of S and J Fountain, S Kirkby, J Slater, E Jenson and J Luddington with a score of 22 followed by Bedale 225 and Otley 228.

Harrogate Juniors v East Riding Juniors

Knaresborough Golf club hosted the match and the teams were allowed to play the new 11th green, which is only being used to a limited extent this year.

The course was in magnificent condition and is a credit to the club and staff for all the hard work carried out over the years.

The match provided president, Don Simpson, with the second victory for his junior team under the junior co-ordinator, Tom Burns, this season. The first being against Teesside Juniors in April.

The morning foursomes provided a winning start dominated by a 7/6 victory by the pairing of Mark Taylor and Ben Johnson, Knaresborough and Harrogate respectively. The afternoon singles continued the morning's success with Martin Padgett and Chris Cropper both from Pannal, gaining victories by margins of seven, six, eight and six respectively, and Knaresborough's Mark Taylor with a 5/4 margin success. All of the team contributed towards this victory by a margin which left no doubt as to strength of the Harrogate Juniors.

Foursomes

Russell Brown and John Goodacre halved with Richard Youden and Ben Milhench. James Sibbles and Mark Driver won two and one over Paul Crosher and Andre Gunnerson.

Oliver Shaw and James Simpson won two and one over Mark Thompson and Steve Ellard. Martin Padgett and Graham Douglas won two and one over David Peasgood and David Scott. Chris Cropper and Tom Curtis lost one down to Steve Coultas and Luke Edeson. Mark Taylor and Ben Johnson won seven and six over Tom Rastall and Matthew Burrows.
