A NORTH-EAST university plans to build world-class cancer and environment centres after winning £33m of funding.

Newcastle University, which already has a respected cancer research team, has won £16.2m from the Science Research Investment Fund and attracted £17.1m from partner organisations.

It plans to spend £11m on a new institute of cancer research and equip the team with the latest equipment.

It also plans to bring world-class researchers together in a new £19m environment research centre, to be built near the Hancock Museum, that will look at subjects such as pollution, global warming, flood control and alternative energy.

The building will also house a centre for e-science.

The university will also spend £1.5m on state-of-the-art equipment for its new nanotechnology centre, and £1.8m on human genetics research.

Professor Trevor Page, the university's pro-vice chancellor for research, said: "This new investment will allow Newcastle to further focus its research with an emphasis on areas important to health, wealth and quality of life in both the regional and national population."
