BACKSTAGE at the Riverside Festival, a group of excited competition winners nervously waited their turn for photographs with their favourites.

The performers, by contrast, seemed unfazed by the attentions of their adoring fans.

Most seemed happy enough to sign autographs and smile for the cameras, while others preferred to lark about with their fellow boy and girl bands.

Headlining the event was former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, who was supported by acts including all-girl R and B band The Honeyz, dance group Da Rude and North-East boy band Point Break.

Attracted by the promise of the latest pop acts taking part in a free concert on a sunny day, thousands of people, from throughout the region, had descended on the Teesside town.

Several people had to be treated by paramedics for sunstroke and claustrophobia. Attempts were made to cool people down using a hose.

TFM presenter Judie McCourt introduced the acts.

There were cheers as newcomers Point Break took to the stage. While not everyone knew who they were, the boys soon had the audience eating out of their hands.

Heather Bundzenieks, TFM's public relations manager, said the concert was a roaring success.

"It has been fantastic," she said. "Geri Halliwell is the UK's top British female popstar, and A1 are a favourite with all young girls.

"To have them here in Stockton is fantastic."

Based on the audience's reaction to the event, it was clear that they agreed.
