YOUNGSTERS from a County Durham primary school are celebrating after scooping the top prize in a competition to raise awareness of security issues at school.

More than 200 schools from across the county were invited to take part in the Safer Schools campaign, devised by Tyneside's Lewis Security Group, and backed by Durham Police and the county council.

The competition, which invited children to design a humane burglar trap, was won by pupils from Esh Laude Roman Catholic Primary School with their Burglar Buster 2001.

Chris Jackson, of Lewis Security Group, said: "We wanted to devise a competition which would not only raise awareness of security among teachers and pupils, but would also be fun, creative and interesting for the children."

Teacher Mark Vasey said: "By introducing the issue of security to the children in a creative and fun way, it encouraged them to think about the sensible methods you should use to protect property."

The pupils won £1,000 of security equipment for their school and new school bags.
