William Brown, 72, suffered multiple injuries after being struck by a red car as he crossed Ashdown Road, Farringdon, Sunderland, shortly after 10pm on Sunday.

Forensic experts have been analysing the pensioner's clothes to identify the make of the car which sped away from the accident.

Mr Brown, of Appleby Road, was last night recovering in Sunderland Royal Hospital.

In a separate incident, a 22-year old man from the Thornill area of Sunderland suffered serious head injuries in an accident, being treated as a hit-and-run.

He was found lying unconscious in Tunstall Road, shortly before 5.15am on Sunday. The man, who has not been identified was admitted to Newcastle General Hospital. Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call 0191-454 7555, ext 66391.
