A SPATE of burglaries by sneak-in thieves have led police to issue a warning to people in Darlington.

Detectives are urging people "not to advertise" when their home is insecure and unattended - even if they are only in the back garden.

Acting Detective Inspector Alec Francis, of Darlington police, said two incidents on Sunday and Monday took the total of sneak-in thefts in the town during the last fortnight to a dozen.

The latest incidents were in Aldgrove Way and Orkney Walk, both of them in daylight.

Acting Det Insp Francis said many of the attacks followed a similar method, with the thief knocking on the door and, when there was no response, walking into the house.

Once inside, the thieves took small items, which were easy to grab, such as keys, cash, purses, handbags and, in one case, a portable television. Personal CD players and handbags had also been taken.

Acting Det Insp Francis said: "Even if they are leaving your home for a couple of minutes, people should keep the house locked and secured at all times.

"When you are in the back garden and the front of your premises is out of sight, don't advertise the fact that your premises are insecure by leaving windows open and doors ajar."

The Aldgrove Way burglary happened between 7am and 10.15am on Monday. The incident in Orkney Walk took place between 10.30am and noon on Sunday.
