IMAGINATIVE young artists showed you should never throw anything away yesterday when they turned lavatory roll cardboard tubes, plastic bottles and other materials ripe for recycling into creations to be proud of.
The children were at a Get Crafty class organised through a Sure Start programme to improve the lives of children living in deprived areas.
Wendy Minhinnet led the youngsters through songs and games during an afternoon session at Henknowle Community Centre, Bishop Auckland.
Get Crafty continues next Tuesday and on August 21, from 1.30pm to 3pm. Other Sure Start summer activities include parent and child play sessions, playschemes, drop-in sessions, aqua-natal classes and top tots events. Venues include the Auckland Youth and Community Centre, Woodhouse Close Church, St Helen Auckland Parish Centre, Taylor Road, McCullagh Gardens and the Woodhouse Close Leisure Centre.
A highlight of the programme will be a teddy bears' picnic in Auckland Castle Park next Wednesday.
The three-year Sure Start project aims to help families with children under four by encouraging them to work with professionals to develop better services. It is based at St Helen Auckland Community School, telephone (01388) 665665.
