A NEW handyman service is on offer to people in Redcar and Cleveland who have assessed social care needs.

The scheme is a partnership between Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Age Concern Teesside and Transmore Van Hire.

It aims to offer people help with minor jobs that are too difficult for individuals to tackle, but are not serious enough to warrant calling out a tradesman.

Jobs such as unblocking sinks, changing light bulbs, small repairs to fences and repairing window frames would all be considered.

The same scheme has been running in Stockton for a few months and both schemes are being hailed as a great success.

Dave Punshon, of Age Concern on Teesside, said: "It is going excellently.

"We have had lots and lots of positive responses and it is a fairly inexpensive service to run, but it provides a lifeline for so many people and there are tradesmen doing a job which people really do appreciate."

The service can be contacted in Redcar and Cleveland by calling (01642) 472153 or 296773 or in Stockton on (01642) 805500.
