Junior round-up - Sunderland Scorpions opened their women's premier league account with a 4-3 victory over Billingham Wildcats on Sunday at the Newcastle Telewest Arena.

Wildcats went ahead in the fourth minute with a Zoe Bayne strike. Scorpions five minutes later drew Clare Foster drew level on her debut after joining from Whitley Bay Squaws.

Vanessa Hill gave Billingham the lead again in the first minute of the middle period only for Micky Pattinson to tie the scores at 22.04. Thirty-eight seconds later Bayne grabbed her second goal of the game to take Wildcats into a 3-2 lead.

Scorpions scored twice in the final period through Jane Price and Lynsey Emmerson at 47.23 and 48.41 respectively.

Wildcats called a time-out at 57.55 and pulled their netminder in the final 20 seconds to find an equaliser but to no avail.

Billingham Pumas were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Solihull Kings in the English Bantam (Under-12) North B League. Pumas and Kings were both relegated from the A league and another close encounter was expected.

Solihull went ahead after five minutes and doubled their lead a minute later. Worse was to come as Kings went 3-0 ahead at 11.48.

Pumas reduced the deficit and began their recovery through Jake Roberts at 13.18.

Pumas scored a second 55 seconds into the final period from Roberts. He completed his hat-trick with the equaliser with five minutes to go.

Billingham Falcons came out second best from their English Pee-Wee (Under-14) North A League match at Blackburn Kestrels going down 3-1. This was despite going ahead after 39 seconds through Adam Smith. Falcons were on top but could not capitalise on their opportunities.

Blackburn went into the interval 2-1 ahead. Kestrels' third came with five minutes remaining.

Billingham Bears suffered a 5-2 defeat at Nottingham Cougars in the English Junior (Under-16) North A League. Bears trailed 0-1 at the end of the first period and a further three before Peter Rix opened Bears' account at 28.26. Five minutes later Anthony Price tucked away Bears' second.

Nottingham fired home a fifth during a physical final period which saw two home players being thrown out of the match.

Peter Rix and Stephen Pritchard received ten minute misconduct penalties during the match.

Sunderland Tomahawks were beaten 7-5 at Telewest Arena by Altrincham Tigers in the English Under-19 North A League. Tomahawks went a goal behind in the second minute and conceded three in the 8th minute to trail 0-4.

Steven Goldsmith and Adam Carr replied to begin Tomahawks' account before Tigers hit a fifth by the first interval. Carr scored his second in the first minute of the second period and Altrincham's six soon followed.

Kristian Lloyd and Carr's hat-trick marker cut the deficit to one after 49 minutes with Sunderland pressing for an equaliser. Altrincham scored their seventh with five minutes left.

Sunderland Arrows lost 5-3 to Altrincham Jets in the English Junior (Under-16) North A League at Newcastle. Jamie Smithson and Michael Allinson gave them a 2-0 lead at 04.19.

Jets pulled a goal back before Lewis Nelson restored the two-goal lead at 16.37.

Seven minutes later Jets were level and another two unanswered in the final period brought Altrincham victory.
