THE Northern Echo has teamed up with Darlington College at Catterick to offer people in North Yorkshire the chance to improve their Internet skills for free.

A hands-on web workshop event will take place from 6pm to 8pm at the College's Catterick campus on Monday, September 17.

The practical session will introduce participants to setting up websites through CommuniGate, The Northern Echo's free community website-building service, at www.communigate.co.uk/ne

Since its launch in September last year, more than 700 charities and non-profit-making groups have joined CommuniGate, which is available to clubs, societies, voluntary and non-profit organisations across the region.

CommuniGate editor Alison Nicholson said: "The scheme aims to help groups raise their profile, promote their activities and fundraising projects, and contact a wider audience via the Internet.

"The Web Workshop event is a great way for people who live in the area to explore CommuniGate and find out more about the fantastic facilities available on their doorstep."

Centre manager John Young said: "The college at Catterick is already proving popular with a wide range of students.

"We will continue to expand our links with local people and the Army on the garrison, while broadening the range of opportunities available."

Residents have a further chance to discover what's on offer at the £3m Learning Centre at a free fun day to mark the second anniversary of its launch.

The entertainment, between 10am and 4pm today, includes a Ready Steady Cook, a Garrison Radio roadshow, crafts, a bouncy castle among other attractions.
