WOMEN are set to get a better deal in business thanks to a new support system set up in Darlington.

The Darlington Women Into Business Network was officially launched last week and has already helped a number of women who want to set up their own companies.

The aim of the network is to enable businesswomen to help each other as well as offering practical support to those considering setting up in business.

Pizza Express, in Skinnergate, has already agreed to help the network by offering members a discount if they entertain clients at the restaurant. It is also offering a room for women to meet and discuss business matters.

All the network's meetings will be organised around the school holidays, to fit in with working mothers' busy lives.

Ann-Marie Jones, of the Business Network, said: "Women face a lot of barriers in business. Many are juggling home and work life and feel vulnerable and isolated. We want women to realise there are other women just like them out there. An accountant can have something to offer a part-time holistic expert and vice-a-versa.

"Thirty four per cent of businesses in Darlington are set up by women and we want to increase that to 50 per cent in two years."

The network is keen to be seen as breaking down barriers and stereotypes, and not as exclusive and discriminating against men.

Ms Jones said: "Men can help us. We want to be on a level playing field, that is all."

The network is training seven mentors to give practical support and advice to individuals.

Ms Jones said: "This is for Darlington and the whole community."
