FAILED efforts by thieves to steal keys from a house saw them make off with a personal stereo instead.
The thieves carried out their raid at a house in The Mead, Darlington, without even stepping inside. After breaking two windows in the porch, they used an object to reach through and try to remove the keys from a table.
However, this was unsuccessful as the keys fell on the floor, but they were able to grab the stereo. The theft happened between 7.15pm and 9.30pm on Thursday.
