Phone mast plan rejected

Plans by a mobile phone firm to add microwave dishes and antennae on a telecommunications mast used by the emergency services in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at Greenhow Hill, near Pateley Bridge, has been rejected by Harrogate Borough Council planners. They say use of the mast by Orange PCS would continue retention of the mast longer than expected and would be deterimental to the area's character.

Road closure: Motorists are being warned about the temporary closure of a short section of the C149 Bullamoor to Jeater Houses road, near Northallerton, from Monday until Friday. Although the closure is scheduled for five days, the work may be completed in three.

ON THE RUN: The popular Richmond Castle Run has been planned for Sunday, Sunday, October 21, with entries accepted until a week before. Anyone over 15 can enter the six-mile run, with entry fees charged at £6 for British Athletic Federation members and £7 to all others. Entry forms are available by telephoning (01748) 824898.

ORGAN DONATION: The 12-strong Harp Singers, who perform in Victorian dress, will be giving a concert in aid of the organ appeal at St Mary's Church in Richmond next month. Tickets, which cost £5 (price includes a glass of wine), can be obtained by calling (01748) 833993 or (01748) 826216.

Show date: There will be drama, music and comedy at the Allertonshire School in Northallerton on Friday, October 19. The Mikron Theatre Company is returning to the school with its show Warehouse Hill, which will be performed in the West Hall, at 7pm.

Tough time: More than 280 pupils from schools across Yorkshire took part in some tough challenges at the Queen Elizabeth barracks, Strensall, near York, during the 13th annual Kings Division Schools Challenge. Winners were Archbishop Thurston School from Hull.

DAMP SQUIB: Bright Star Fireworks (UK) Ltd has been told by planners at Harrogate Borough Council that plans to retain two temporary office buildings on its site at a Melmerby business park, near Ripon, would have a detrimental effect on the area's amenity and character at the entrance to the park. Planners say the temporary buildings are not needed by a firm currently occupying the site
