The top division one game of the week took Middlesbrough Mavericks on the short trip to Billingham where hosts Teesside Huskies handed out a 109-61 derby defeat.

Huskies led from the start. Rob Harland missed most of the last two seasons, but he is still a class act and he gave Huskies the start they needed and a 18-10 cushion after ten minutes.

The middle two quarters of the game were all Huskies. Andy Wright, Deng Deng and Tony Hanson took control of the boards at both ends of court to not only stifle Mavericks offence, but also to run in 34 points in each quarter and set up their victory with a 86-43 lead with ten minutes to play. Mavericks did gain a little consolation in winning the final quarter 22-20, even though it was too little and too late.

Harland and Jon Stonebridge led the way for Teesside Huskies with 29 and 22 points each, James Thompson and Deng collected 14 apiece. Best for Mavericks were Andrew Swanson and Ian Viveash with 16 and 14 each.

The youngsters of Middlesbrough College Academy faced their toughest test of the short season so far when they lined up against guests Nissan, but they passed it with flying colours in collecting a 'ton-up' 100-88 success.

By the time Nissan had found their feet Kieron Achara and Marlon Henry had shared in a good start and the Academy youngsters were 29-12 up. Nissan applied the brakes to the fast flowing Academy offence in the second quarter and with Bill Spragg and Neil Thorne doing most of the damage the deficit was down to just 48-46.

The third quarter was even, although it was Academy who led 73-68 with ten minutes to play. That final quarter belonged to Carl Latham-Henry as he coaxed the best from the Academy players around him to run Nissan into the ground.

Six players collected double figure scores for Middlesbrough College Academy; Latham-Henry (21), Roberts (19), Gayle (16), Achara (15), Henry (12) and Wayne Robinson (10). Best for Nissan was Thorne with 26, Spragg and Barry Fenwick added 19 and 15.

There were big wins for two second division sides, Trimdon Community College Association and Hartlepool Hornets, although each was against sides which were both under-strength.

Trimdon CCA beat neighbours Hartlepool CJ Hydraulics A 130-66 in their derby at Trimdon, whilst Hornets stung Peterlee Video with a 119-59 drubbing at Peterlee Leisure Centre.

Five players shared all of the Trimdon CCA points, Wayne Oliver and Ian Harrison led the way with 37 and 34 each, whilst Chris Elliott, Chris Templeton and John Templeton netted 22, 19 and 18 respectively.

At Peterlee, everyone scored for Hornets, although they also had five players in double figures. Dan Bailey was outstanding in collecting 34, Alex Brown and Graham Ord hit 18 apiece, whilst Sean Ward and Bruce Marshall chipped in with 16 and 12. Only two players came out of the respective games with any credit for the losing sides.

Andrew Griffiths hit 28 for Hartlepool CJ Hydraulics and Sean Percival managed 30 for Peterlee Video, both deserved more support.

A couple of more even division two games produced wins for Old Houghtonians and East Durham and Houghall College B.

A good final quarter netted Old Houghtonians the win of the week, a 62-48 triumph at home to the current second division champions Consett Steelers.

Three-quarters of the contest had been relatively even and had finished at 41-34 to Houghtonians. Philip Smailes then took the game by the scruff of the neck to hit 13 in a 21-14 final quarter and win the Washington side the game.

At Peterlee, Jamie Paul conjured up a good start to put East Durham and Houghall College B 20-14 up by the end of the first quarter of their game with Shildon Strollers. That cushion had stretched to 77-58 by the end as, try as they might, Strollers could never quite get back on terms.

Philip Smailes and Jamie Paul were the leading scorers.

The former hit 24 for Old Houghtonians, whilst the latter notched 26 for East Durham and Houghall College B.

In the womens division Nunthorpe Boro Bruins beat Newcastle College 84-50.

A Lisa Roughley 'purple patch' netted her 22 points as Nunthorpe built up a 33-17 advantage by the interval.

Sarah Hindmarch took over from her on the restart to land 28 of her 37 match point total in the second 20 minutes, and although the College youngsters never stopped working they were always second best.

Roughley ended up with 29 points to add to the 37 scored by Hindmarch.
