SCHOOLCHILDREN have been raising money for charity as part of their harvest festival celebrations.

Pupils at Blue Coat Primary School, in Newton Hall, Durham City, collected donations for Action for Hunger.

They made gift cards in the shape of apples and oranges to hold the money.

Seven-year-old Sam Gowland decided to donate the £2 that he received from the Tooth Fairy.

Mark Rowney, the charity's national representative, visited the school yesterday to talk about its work and to collect the youngsters' donations.

Deputy headteacher Karen Dooley said: "The school sometimes does this at harvest time, rather than collecting fruit and vegetables to donate to an old people's home.

"It seemed appropriate, given the current situation with refugees, and certainly when I saw this particular charity on TV, they were getting aid through.
