THE first 100 blankets have been made from sections of the world's longest scarf.

The 25-and-a-half mile scarf was knitted by members of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service and Women's Institute.

It is being converted into more than 2,500 blankets for charity by women at Low Newton Prison and Young Offenders' Institution in Durham City.

A spokesman for the prison said: "The women are thoroughly enjoying working on the blankets as they feel it is one way of putting something back into the community. Some of the blankets have already been distributed to organisations such as The Salvation Army and a Romanian orphanage, so it is wonderful to know we are able to help people in this way.
