A rush of blood by Jussi Jaaskelainen turned a tight game dramatically in the Magpies' favour as Bobby Robson's men ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at the Reebok Stadium.
The Bolton keeper rushed out of his box to handle Laurent Robert's long ball with Alan Shearer lurking just behind the Fin. Bo Hansen pulled on the goalkeeper's jersey - as the Trotters boss Sam Alardyce had no keeper on the bench - just in time to see Robert's free-kick fly past his outstretched right hand putting Newcastle 2-0 up.
Robbie Elliottt on his return to the Reebok Stadium provided Newcastle's opener on 31 minutes, crossing for Shearer to head back to offside looking Nolberto Solano, to put the finishing touches on United first.
After Robert's second the game ended as a contest with Shearer and Craig Bellamy rounding off the goalscoring.
