UPBEAT Chris Turner wants to be singing a different tune tonight.

The Hartlepool United boss is fed-up of seeing his side come away from games with little or no reward for their efforts this season - and now he's looking for the right result.

Pool are bottom of the table, a position which had become alien to Pool under the Turner's shrewd stewardship.

And it's even more galling for the Pool boss when he knows their displays have merited more reward this season.

He said: "I was speaking during the week to Ronnie Moore at Rotherham and it seems our season is a mirror image of theirs - they are playing well, but are bottom of the table.

"He said he can play a tape every week when he speaks to the Press after a game because it's the same story every week. I feel in exactly the same situation.

"We've hit rock bottom in the League - you can't hide from the fact - but we are all positive and confident.

"We've been here before, but that time we were bottom with something like nine games to go and I'd only been here for about five weeks.

"There's not the pressure around now that we had in that situation, but we are doing everything we can to get away from the bottom.

"It's the mistakes that are costing us, simple mistakes from players who weren't making them last season. I know that if we play like we did last week at Rushden and cut out the mistakes then we will be OK.''

Turner believes the results will come once those mistakes have been eradicated.

He said: "If we beat York at home then we have won back to back home games and our form at home is coming good.

"We've then got two away games coming up and we have to look at picking something up from them.

"I've been delighted with the players' attitude, their work-rate and commitment has been great during the week. The reserves have won their last three games, the youth team have been winning as well and the club is solid from top to bottom.

"But I know it's the first team results that matter and they are the most important ones.''

Turner asked his out-of-favour charges for a positive response in the reserves in midweek and after impressive performances Paul Arnison and Adam Boyd are pushing for a starting berth, while Tony Sweeney is in the squad.

"There are a lot of good, young players at the club,'' added Turner. "Young Sweeney is in the squad for the game and he deserves to be.

"I know we are at the bottom of the League and we are having a disappointing time of things. There is a good team spirit here, it's a good football club and we will turn it around and move away from the bottom.

"I hope that people will be patient, see the overall picture and realise what we are trying to achieve here.''

Defender Gordon Simms is missing today after suffering a calf strain in the reserves in midweek, while Anth Lormor is struggling with an ankle injury.

* Mark Tinkler will gladly sacrifice personal glory to steer Hartlepool United away from bottom spot this afternoon,.

Pool entertain Tinkler's former club York City at Victoria Park, sitting in the uncomfortable bottom position for the first time since losing at home to Brentford on April 3, 1999.

Pool might have failed to pick up the points their performances have merited this season, but it's little consolation for Tinkler and his teammates.

With three goals to his credit this campaign, Tinkler is Pool's joint leading scorer, and remains confident an upturn in fortunes is not far away.

"We are playing some good stuff,'' he said. "At times the final ball into the box hasn't been there, but we've just got to cut out the mistakes that have cost us.

"We'll keep believing in ourselves and it will come good. Losing last week at Rushden put more pressure on us and we were gutted about it.

"But it's our own fault. We know we should be in the top half of the table, but at the moment we are at the bottom.

"We should be there, we've got the players here to do it. We should be pushing for it, it's just not happening for us.

"The gaffer signed a lot of players this summer, the new lads have come in and everyone is getting along great. What we have to do is start to defend as a team and put more pressure on players around our own box.

"We've had a slow start to the season, but we know we should be doing better.

" Hopefully we can put these results behind us and start looking up the table. Our form isn't far away. If we were getting beaten by three or four every week then we would be looking at things and wondering what we have to do, but it's not like that. We are not far away from turning the corner.''
