EXAM results in a North-East city have improved by nearly double the national average.
The percentage of pupils in Sunderland gaining five or more A* to C grade GCSEs rose by one per cent to 39.5 per cent.
Figures during the past three years show Sunderland improving by seven per cent compared with a 3.5 per cent national average.
Head of research and policy in Sunderland City Council's Education and Community Services Department, Edmund Smith, said: "For the first time in the city's history 40 per cent of young people achieved five or more A* to C grades in their GCSEs this year.
"Combined with another good set of results in the number achieving five or more A* to G grades, this has made 2001 an important year for us.
"Congratulations must go to the pupils, their families and their teachers for these excellent results."
