Round two of the North-East Winter League moved to the carp filled waters of Woodland Lakes Carlton Miniott was spread between Curlew, Kestrel, Partridge, Skylark, and Wagtail and there was plenty of sport for all with only two blanks, writes JEFF HERBERT.

Man of the match Dave Harris of Cleveland Angling Centre netted 51.2.0 to finish in front of the 120 strong field. The formidable cat meat along with worm on the long pole delivered a bag of mostly carp including samples up to 8.0.0 from peg three on one of the complex's newest lakes Wagtail.

Darlington Angling Centre rod Andy Dargue drew on the popular Partridge Lake and poled his way to 45.2.0 off peg five. Highlight of his catch proved a common carp which took the scales to 12.0.0 and reported to be one of the biggest ever taken from Partridge.

Top three teams: Tying Cleveland Angling Centre & Newman Scott Blue with 90 points from Darlington Angling Centre 82.

League: Tying in 1st place Cleveland Angling Centre and Darlington Angling Centre 4 points; 3. Newman Scott Blue 5 points; 4. Yarm Flynns 9; 5. Billingham Tackle Box 11; Tying in 6th position Yarm AA & Dick Clegg Team Metro 13.

The Thornaby AA Centenary Cup attracted a good turnout of 62 rods and they all got drenched in process. On the Croft reaches of the Tees grayling and dace dominated the results with just odd chub putting in an appearance.

Darlington's Dave Oxley enjoyed a comfortable victory. Settling into peg 61 above the Salmon Pool stickfloat and maggot tactics down the inside brought both grayling and dace on the feed steadily throughout totalling 7.12.0 at the whistle.

Next door on peg 62 one below sat fellow rod Malcolm Clitheroe who also located grayling and dace to similar tactics for 5.5.0

Others: George Pierce (Brotton) 4.14.0, Mick Clitheroe (Darlington) 4.10.0.

Fished on the deep water section below Hewick Bridge conditions were far from perfect on the Ure for the Ripon Piscatorials Tetley Cup. Heavy rainfall coupled with a chocolate coloured river raging through and four foot up hindered sport.

Other than the winner who finished way out in front ounces were vital to sort out the rest of the pecking order.

The Ure fast gaining a reputation for its heavyweight barbel following Peter Riley's 10.6.0 fish in a recent Boroughbridge match on the Ings Lane Section, Marsh Tackle's Terry Morgan landed the second double of October another splendid specimen of 10.2.0. He slipped the landing net under the glorious double just an hour into the match and the result was a foregone conclusion. Pegged on 77 above the Yachting station legering inside on wasp grub also added two chub pushing the scales to 12.7.0.

Second place saw a tie of 5.4.0 between Dave Robson of Selby whose stickfloat and maggot approach tempted roach and a sprinkling of dace from peg 86 while Steve Hodson of RSPS connected with roach and eels to pole maggot & worm from peg 21 below the Canal Nab End.

The trend of specimen fish from local rivers continued on the River Wharfe during the Tadcaster APA Open.

Vic Rookes of Glenn hauled out a surprise common carp of 20.4.0 from the Smaws Ings match length off peg 44. With the river carrying 12" of extra water Vic got the benefit of his heavier approach on the bomb & lobworm - a deciding factor in his winning battle against the huge but welcome monster.

A few perch and eels added later boosted his score to 22.9.0.

In contrast a trio of big bream for 19.0.0 on legered worm from peg three pushed local rod Paul Claydon into second place from Tom Gausden Anglers World 13.9.0.
