It will probably be a What Happened Next? poser on an episode of A Question Of Sport: which football team changed football kit during a match and why?

The team is Darlington and the reason is referee Mike Jones, although that's a little harsh on the Chester official because the Hull City kit man obviously dropped almost as big a clanger as the whistle-blower's controversial penalty award.

What possessed the Hull kit man to leave the Tigers' first-choice amber strip at Boothferry Park and fetch a pale grey away kit to Feethams where Darlington play in a white shirt - beggars belief.

Because of a clash with Darlington's black shorts, before the game Mr Jones instructed the Tigers to use Darlington's white shorts instead of their own navy version.

But instead of ordering a change of shirts too, the referee took until ten minutes into the game before asking the home players to change into their red second choice shirts.

"Five minutes into the game, a couple of Darlington players said that they were struggling, plus the bright sunshine wasn't helping. It's the first time it's happened to me," explained Mr Jones.

Despite the hiccup, Hull boss Brian Little enjoyed the warm welcome he received at Feethams, where at one point during the second half, supporters at both ends sang "There's only one Brian Little," in unison.

He said: "It's always great to come here. I had two fantastic years here and I love the place, the people were great to me but I did get in trouble for the shirts being the wrong colour!

"I hadn't a clue what colour we were playing in because I'm not the kit man and I've no intention of becoming the kit man.

"One Darlington fan was giving me a bit of stick about it but, generally, the fans were brilliant to me and it's great to go back to a club where you've been successful and you've moved for the right reasons and this will always be the place I'll like to come back to, even just to watch a game."

And he certainly enjoyed Saturday's game, a match he believes his team won without too much trouble.

"It was a more comfortable 1-0 than others I've known, he said. "I thought it was a hard game for Darlington, I thought they played well without creating chances.

"Second half, once we were organised we won comfortably.
