What's hot

Towing the line: Believe it or not, caravanning is set to become cool. Traditionally the hobby of the elderly or those who like tame holidays travelling with their own washing-up bowl, things in the world of caravans are about to change. Eminem is reportedly about to sample Barbara Dickson's track Caravan on his next release. Not only will this do wonders for Babs's career, but if Eminem includes a caravan in the video, we could all soon be crying out for a mobile home holiday. Caravans may not be flash but they do give you the freedom of the road and if you want a cheap holiday they are the ideal form of transport. Eminem's endorsement of caravans may also have parents unusually welcoming his new single - if he gets teenagers turning their noses up at expensive foreign vacations, the obnoxious rapper can't be all bad.

Mash makes a smash: A new survey has revealed that the British public prefers traditional mash to fries or chips. At first glance this looks like a good thing for our health, but it all depends how you mash your spuds. Add butter, full-fat milk or even cream, and you might be better off eating greasy fries any day, but it's good to know that traditional British grub is making a comeback. It's easier these days to buy a pizza or curry than a portion of toad-in-the-hole, but it seems we are still eager to tuck into food like our mothers used to make, and it's good to see it making a long overdue return to our tables.

Being blonde: In case you didn't know, National Blonde Week has just come to a close. It seems that blondes really do have more fun, with huge numbers of celebrities reaching for the bleach bottle. The success of the new Reese Witherspoon film Legally Blonde is also helping the cause with everyone realising the most attractive trait a blonde can have is the ability to laugh at herself. For years, blonde has meant dizzy and a bit stupid, but the new lighter image suggests underneath that mass of highlights is a seriously cool brain. It's all about how you wear the look. You can play up to the image like Helen from Big Brother - she may come across as dense but who's having the last laugh on the way to the bank? - or turn down the heat and be icy cool like Cameron Diaz. Being blonde opens a world of possibilities, all of which suggest a subtle sexuality which is incredibly feminine. But a word of warning before you go light - head to a professional to get the right look, otherwise you could be left with a mass of green straw-like hair.

Golden oldies: Why shouldn't Geri Halliwell belt out some of The Spice Girls hits when she performs live on stage? There have been suggestions that a two-song set of songs by the Spices should not be included in Geri's shows because of her split from the band. The ginger one wants to perform Wannabe and Who Do You Think You Are? which were both hits for the band before she left. By giving up her place in the band, Geri did not forego all rights to ever perform the hits. Without her, the Spices would have certainly lacked a lot of their drive in the early days and so she has every right to sing the songs she helped to make hits. Anyway, with rumours that The Spice Girls may be splitting up for good it's not as though anyone else will be singing the old songs.

What's not

Hanging out: Next time there is a huge celebrity award ceremony, the organisers should simply tell everyone to come in the nude. At the recent TV Awards, it seemed the instruction to bare all had already been handed out. Nearly all the actresses and presenters at the televised show arrived wearing little more than a smile. Where once it was models like Kelly Brook who dared to bare, now B-list stars from The Bill and Emmerdale see fit to show off their assets. The amount of flesh on show at the awards was not only obscene, it was truly tacky. If one person shows a bit of their body it looks great, if everyone does it, it looks cheap. At the TV Awards, there were more breasts on show than a nudist beach and nothing was left to the imagination. Those women who did show it off should look at the photos from the night - they may have got the most media coverage, but the likes of Davina McCall and Claire Buckfield who covered up looked a million dollars.

Step away: Lee from Steps should stop giving interviews and stick to what he does best. The dark-haired lovely from the top band has said he treats being a pop star as simply a job, and singing most of the group's hits makes him cringe. Although Lee, who is a rock fan, may hate the pop tunes he sings, there are thousands of youngsters who love what he does. If everyone else cringed as soon as he opened his mouth, then he wouldn't be in the privileged position he is. Most popstars are much older than their fans so they are bound to have different tastes in music, but they should either grin and bear it, or move on to appeal to an older audience. No one would claim that being a pop star is brain surgery, but it is a job that millions of youngsters aspire to. Insulting your fans and making out that posh parties and a jet-set lifestyle are simply a job, is no way to treat those who have made you a star.
