SOME of the region's top designers will be selling their wares at a Christmas shopping event in Auckland Castle.

Unusual Christmas gifts will be on sale at the venue, at Bishop Auckland, County Durham, on November 10 and 11.

Stephen Gregory, multiple winner of the Goldsmith Crafts Council of London Award, will offer advice on turning old gold into something new and exciting to wear.

A spokesman said: "If you have granny's brooch lying half forgotten in a drawer, bring it along and see what can be made from it."

There will also be ceramics, wood, metalwork, textiles, artwork, knitwear, natural cosmetics and an opportunity to have a hand or head massage from a Finnish masseur.

The castle is home to the famous Zurburan paintings, which may soon be lost to the region as the Church Commission has agreed to their sale.

The spokesman added: "This is a wonderful opportunity not only to visit the castle, its wonderful private chapel and to see the paintings for maybe the last time, but also the chance of finding those special gifts for special people."

The event is open from 11am to 5pm both days. Entrance fee is £3. For details, call (01388) 601627 or (0191) 3863050.
