THEY will be hoping for fireworks on stage at the Bonfire Night opening of High Society next month.

Chester-le-Street Amateur Operatic Society is performing its version of the classic musical at the town's Park View Community Theatre, starting on Monday, November 5, with the closing night the following Saturday.

Originally staged and filmed as The Philadelphia Story in the 1930s, its name changed to High Society in 1956 when it became a blockbuster musical, starring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter.

It includes many memorable tunes, including Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?, Just One of Those Things, and Well, Did You Ever?.

The operatic society has been rehearsing hard under the direction of Linda Watson, with musical direction by Michael Heaton. The principal cast sees Fiona Hunter play Tracey Lord, Gary Wilkinson is Dexter Haven, Rosalyn Laws appears as Liz Imbrie and Robert Nicholson is Mike Conner.

Tickets for the shows, which start at 7.20pm each evening, are available from any society member or by phoning 0191-584 3061.
