A THIEF drove off with a van while the owner desperately clung on to the door, police said yesterday.

The thief pushed the driver out of the way as he stood next to the white Ford Transit van in Oakdene Road, Fishburn, at 10.15am on Thursday.

He drove off in the £6,000 vehicle which had the key in the ignition.

The owner tried to hang on to the driver's door, but eventually lost his grip.

PC Tony Burn, of Newton Aycliffe police, said: "The driver could have been seriously injured if he had fallen beneath the wheels. We are therefore very anxious to speak to anyone who has any information about this theft."

Police believe they know the identity of the thief. The van had the words "Ace Van Hire" on the side and contained a number of mail order electrical items.
