FLATS for the elderly are to be built on the site of a former garage in Saltburn.

Tees Valley Housing Group has announced plans for specially-designed flats at the former Watson's Garage in Milton Street. The £790,000 scheme will result in 12 purpose-built flats in the heart of Saltburn.

Demolition of the former garage will start later this month and is expected to take around four weeks to complete.

Work on the flats is due to begin next spring. The flats will be available to rent at the end of next year.

The group bought the site a year ago and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has now granted planning permission.

The scheme will complement the existing sheltered housing development at nearby Gresley Court.

Alison Thain, the group's chief executive, said: "This is an important new development for Saltburn. These new flats for the elderly will extend the housing provision for local elderly people and provide a high-quality home for local people right at the heart of the community.

"It follows our policy of developing old brownfield sites and converting them into new housing for local communities while improving the area at the same time."
