MORE than one million used stamps have been collected in east Cleveland to help the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
Yesterday, guide dog in training Tally and her puppy walker, Margaret Mableson, collected the stamps from the area's main drop-off point, Sotheran's, the stationer in Redcar.
Used stamps are cut from envelopes by people across the area, who bring them into the company. They are then sold to a specialist firm, which packages them for stamp collectors across Europe.
A million stamps pays for the basic training of one guide dog puppy.
Peter Southeran, managing director of the family-run firm, said: "We are delighted to help the Guide Dogs Association, and we are grateful to all our customers who have sent their used stamps to us.
"Collecting used stamps has got to be the ultimate in recycling - it costs virtually nothing and the benefits to the guide dogs and their owners are tremendous.
"Christmas is the best time of the year to collect used postage stamps from Britain and abroad, and we look forward to making a bumper start on our next million stamps as Christmas approaches."
