NORTHUMBRIAN Water Environmental Trust has made a grant of £150,000 to three community foundations in the region, to help support grassroots environmental improvements.

Green Scheme, managed by Cleveland Community Foundation, County Durham Foundation and the Community Foundation for Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, has been awarded the money.

In Redcar, residents working on an area of derelict land to create a community garden, in partnership with the Wildlife Trust, have been awarded a Green Scheme grant of £1,000 to buy seating and shrubs.

The Lazarus Foundation's recycling project, in Sunderland, has benefited from a £500 grant to help community groups brighten up their premises, by recycling and distributing hundreds of gallons of paint.

In Stanley, County Durham, The Famous Ladies Residents' Association has been awarded £1,000 to brighten up South Stanley Woods.

The original idea for Green Scheme, which makes grants of between £500 and £1,000, came from County Durham Foundation board member David Watson, previously of Northumbrian Water
