DARLINGTON topped 100 points for the third time in recent seasons and went on to a club record score in a 123-10 home win against Wigton.

The Cumbrians, who had to shut down from mid-February last season because of foot-and-mouth, are on minus two points in North One after failing to turn out a side to visit Driffield.

They were struggling to find enough bodies to visit Darlington and had asked for a 3pm kick-off, but this merely allowed the hosts to play exhibition stuff on their superb, floodlit surface.

There was only one try in the first 20 minutes, but after that it was virtually unopposed rugby as it became 52-3 at half-time and 116-3 with ten minutes left before Darlington eased off and allowed Wigton a consolation score.

Player-coach Craig Lee came off towards the end with a damaged shoulder and Darlington will certainly not want to be without him for the far tougher match at third-placed West Park St Helens on Saturday.

There were 19 tries and 14 conversions by David Glendenning. The only hat-trick was scored by winger Frankie Coulson, while there were two tries each for Rob Stewart, Simon White, Paul Beattie, Del Lewis and Ian Dobson.

The others were touched down by Glendenning, Paul Lee, Bryan Dixon, Rob Goddard, Martin Howe and Dan Miller.

Dobson, the former Sunderland fly half, showed good pace when he went on as a replacement at centre, while the most spectacular try came from scrum half Stewart, side-stepping several players on a run from his own 22.

In the battle to decide who will go down with Wigton, Middlesbrough climbed above Bradford and Bingley when they beat them 35-22 at Acklam Park.

It looked like being a repeat of their match at Driffield as they conceded three tries after forging into a 27-3 lead.

But John Dixon went on at lock to shore things up, and flanker Gavin Fingland also came off the bench to score the final try.

With most of Boro's six tries being scored wide out, fly half Ian Wilson managed only one conversion and Jon Wrigley took over to land a late penalty in front of the posts. Bradford went ahead with a penalty, but once the Boro pack established control they scored three tries in 20 minutes.

Skipper Richard McRae touched down a pushover, Wrigley darted over from a scrum and lock Ian Robinson was driven over.

Wilson weaved through to score under the posts and converted to make it 22-3 at half-time and on the restart a move which started in Boro's own half ended with winger Wes Henry racing in from 30 metres. The visitors reduced the gap to five points before Boro rallied and ensured the ten-point margin they needed to go above Bradford.

Blaydon moved above visitors Morley in the mid-table battle in National Three North with a 26-15 win.

Flanker Dean Elminger was involved in both tries, by winger James O'Malley and scrum half Andy Foreman, as Blaydon built an 18-3 lead.

James Lofthouse landed two penalties and a conversion, but was called on to add a third penalty after the gap came down to 18-15. Blaydon made sure in the last minute when Foreman broke on the blind side for his eighth try of the season.

West Hartlepool were 29-0 down before Jamie Connolly scored two tries to make the final score 37-12 at home to Nuneaton.

In North Two East, Stockton slipped to third from bottom when they lost 22-12 at Old Crossleyans, while Westoe moved above them by becoming the first team to beat Cleckheaton.

Westoe came back from 10-3 down to win 21-10 with David Fairlamb scoring two of their three tries.

Third-placed Redcar are now level on points with Cleckheaton following a 24-7 win at home to Goole, tries coming from centre Andrew McIntee, full back Ian Fawcett and prop Mark Leat.

Northallerton beat visitors Huddersfield YMCA 20-13 in Yorkshire Two, scoring tries through Matt Bell and Ed Bulman, who added the goal points.
