BOY racer Jonathan Potts is proving a fast learner behind the wheel in the world of motor sports.

But he needs the spark of cash backing to ensure he fulfils his potential as a driver.

Just months after passing his driving test, 17-year-old Jonathan quickly sped off the grid to land silverware in successive events held at the country's most famous motor racing circuit.

Jonathan, the son of Durham motor mechanic Gary Potts, has been brought up a motor racing fan.

He went on an intensive race school course at Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix, to earn his race licence in August.

At the end of the week-long course he finished second in his maiden race against mostly older competitors.

Jonathan, of Pittington, near Durham, returned to Silverstone recently to compete in two end-of-season races after raising £1,500 from local sponsors, who were mainly business contacts of his father.

He repaid the faith his backers placed in him by winning both races, to earn his first laurel wreaths.

Now taking A-levels at Framwellgate School, Durham, Jonathan aims to take part in next season's Formula Ford Zetec championship, which takes in the country's leading race circuits, including Croft, near Darlington.

But Gary said just to use a hired vehicle for the season would cost £36,000, which is out of the league of most small businesses.

"It's a big step, but you can put your sponsors' names on the car and with the championship televised by Sky it guarantees the sponsors get some exposure.

"We are obviously looking for some larger companies to step in to help, as grateful as we are to the smaller firms who have supported Jonathan so far."
