A RELIC of country life is to be restored to its former glory in a North Yorkshire village.

Terrington parish council is hoping to renovate the parish pump in the village, near Malton.

The pump has been on the village green for years but has fallen into disrepair since a tree branch fell on it eight years ago.

Castle Howard Estate, which owned the tree, agreed to mend the pump but the spout and handle were refitted incorrectly.

It is now planned to restore the pump to working order with help from the Howardian Hills parish projects heritage unit, and cash from the parish council.

Council chairman John Goodwill said: "It would be great to have the pump actually working again but it will need equipment to pump up the water."

The pump was the village's main water supply until the early 1930s and the parish council is now asking Terrington residents to search their attics for old photographs of the pump in its original state to help the restoration work.
