PUBLIC approval is being sought for plans for a 115-acre development on an old industrial site in Darlington.

Letters have been sent out to local residents asking for their views on the proposed West Park project in Faverdale which will be considered by Darlington Borough Council's planning committee next month.

The £75m development will be built on the former Darchem chemical plant site, north-west of Darlington, by Bussey and Armstrong Projects.

It will include 600 homes, a £15m NHS mental health unit, a new home for Mowden Park Rugby Club, a doctor's surgery and a community park.

The Mental Health Unit will have 85 beds, day hospital facilities for 40 patients and offer occupational therapy and workshops.

Under the plans, Mowden Park Rugby Club will acquire floodlit pitches, a clubhouse, Press and television facilities, and room for up to 1,350 spectators.

The plans have won Government backing but a detailed application must be approved by the council's planning committee in February before work can begin.

Residents' comments should reach the council by January 21.
