POLICE have warned residents in the Washington area to be on their guard following several sneak-in thefts.
Since the New Year, opportunist thieves have struck in the Washington and Houghton-le-Spring areas after noticing windows in homes and cars open enough for a thief to gain access.
Crime Prevention Officer PC Dean Thompson said closing and locking windows can make all the difference.
He advised people to fit and use good quality locks to both front and rear doors. Neighbours are asked to report anything which looks suspicious to police immediately.
