THE body of a woman found in a dumped suitcase has been identified as that of a 21-year-old Korean student.

The badly decomposed body of Hyo Jung Jin, who was studying French at the University of Lyon, was found in a hedge just outside the village of Askham Richard, near York, on November 18.

She is understood to have been due to visit London while in this country and a team of 12 North Yorkshire Police officers are now working with their Metropolitan Police counterparts.

Concerns for Miss Jin's safety were raised by fellow students when she failed to return to France in late October.

They informed her family in the Far East, who in turn contacted the Korean Embassy in Paris. At the same time, Miss Jin's brother posted details about her on a website and appealed for information.

The entry was spotted by a South Korean police officer studying at Leeds University, who made contact with the Korean community in London. Miss Jin's fingerprints were passed to North Yorkshire Police, who subsequently made the positive identification.

A spokesman said the next phase of the investigation would focus on the victim's movements and associates.
