A POLICE investigation into the mysterious disappearance of a 77-year-old war veteran nearly six weeks ago has failed to throw up any clues, despite continued public appeals for information.

Officers from Durham Constabulary and members of the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Rescue Team have so far drawn a blank on the whereabouts of Robert English, from Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham.

The former RAF serviceman and prisoner-of-war was last seen buying a newspaper from Mickleton Post Office, at about 2.30pm, on November 26.

Days later his red Vauxhall Astra was found parked on a road near the Brownberry Plantation, near to Grassholme and Selset Reservoirs, in Teesdale, a beauty spot Mr English would often visit to read his paper.

The pensioner's family has helped in a series of searches for him around the reservoirs, but without success.

Volunteers from the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Rescue Teams have spent more than 500 man-hours scouring land in search of clues, with help from the Police Air Support Unit, the Teesdale Canoe Group and an underground rescue team.

Detective Sergeant Shaun Jackson, of Bishop Auckland CID, said anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Mr English should contact police.

He said: "So far we haven't had very much to go on, and obviously it has been a very difficult time for Mr English's family.

"I'm sure they would appreciate any information which may help us find Mr English."

Anyone who may have seen Mr English or has any information, can contact Barnard Castle police, on (01833) 637328.
