THE longest-serving mobile warden in the Richmondshire district has finally put her feet up after years of caring for the elderly and disabled.

Margaret Hughes worked for the Council's Lifeline Service since its inception in 1988 and was the only original member of the team remaining.

The service puts a lifeline into people's homes through a portable alarm system linked to a 24-hour call centre.

The mobile wardens provide emergency cover for the service as well as carrying out regular home visits in their own areas and providing support for local sheltered housing schemes.

Margaret was one of four mobile wardens and was responsible for villages such as Aldbrough St John, Barton, Croft, Gilling West and Stapleton.

Council leader John Blackie said: "Margaret has been a wonderful ambassador for one of our flagship services. We wish her a long and happy retirement."

Senior housing officer Gavin White said: "No matter what time of the day or night she is called upon, Margaret is always cheerful and friendly. She has a great sense of humour and cares deeply about the people she looks after. I am sure she will be greatly missed."

Margaret and her husband, Brian, plan to move to Wales and buy a camper van for travelling further afield.
