PLANS have been approved for a new-style bus stop, despite residents' opposition.

Durham County Council proposes to create a promontory at a stop in Woodside, Witton Road, Sacriston.

Highways officials say the new-look stop will make it easier for elderly and disabled passengers to get on easy-access buses.

They ruled out creating a marked bus box because on-street parking is at a premium and decided the promontory would take less space.

But the scheme attracted four objections, along with one letter of approval.

Officials looked at moving the stop, but this was considered unsuitable, because parking problems could be worse. Other locations were looked at but also ruled out.

Some of the objectors said they suffered from people at the stop looking into their homes.

Passengers also caused noise and vandalism, dropped litter and were verbally abusive.

Highways director Roger Elphick told the highways committee: "If a promontory goes in, there is the potential for people to stand further away from the houses.

"Whatever we do is a compromise and somebody is not going to be as happy as someone else."

He said that while the views of the objectors were noted, the promontory was the most appropriate solution.
