Sunderland manager Peter Reid may be about to make a move for Valencia striker John Carew.

Just days after seeing an £8m move to Fulham collapse, the giant Norwegian could yet play in the Premiership as Black Cats boss Reid bids to bolster an attack which has produced just 18 goals this season.

The 6ft 4in targetman's move to Craven Cottage was abandoned at the weekend when a problem with the player's knee was discovered.

However, Valencia and Norway team doctor's were quick to play down claim's that Carew had 'jumper's knee.'

Sunderland's previous transfer record was the £4.5m paid to Chelsea for defender Emerson Thome and if the Wearsiders are to stand any chance of bringing Carew to the Stadium of Light then they may have to double that record.

"I've made an inquiry and the situation is on going," said Reid.

Carew's agent, Per Flod, was quick to play down the link, saying: "It is just a rumour. I have not talked to Peter Reid."

"I have heard there is interest from other clubs, also in the Premiership - but neither myself or Valencia have anything concrete," added Flod.

"John does not know where he's going from one day to the next. But at the moment he's staying. That is the situation, he loves Valencia, they are a good club and he is set to play in some games."
