AN animal sanctuary is making an appeal to find homes for nine stray cats which were left at the refuge.

Sally Rowley offered to help residents in Woodhouse Lane, Bishop Auckland, who were plagued by the animals, which had found shelter in empty houses.

However, the sanctuary owner did not expect to have to find homes for four kittens and five adult cats.

She said: "A man living on the estate rounded up the cats and brought them up here in a box.

"I offered to help but I did not expect so many, and I do not really have the facilities to cope.''

The kittens are now being looked after at a home in Stanhope while the adults stay at the sanctuary.

All the adult cats are spayed but the kittens will need to be neutered when they reach six months.

Anyone who can offer a good home to any of the animals is asked to contact Mrs Rowley on (01388) 526375
