AN investigation is under way after more than 70 east Durham residents complained of a foul smell.

The pong, affecting Seaham, Dalton-le-Dale and Easington, is thought to originate from fertiliser made from sewage sludge.

Environmental health officers from Easington District Council are holding meetings with those responsible for applying the fertiliser.

Councillor David Taylor-Gooby, the council's member for the environment, said: "Easington District Council is very concerned about the level of disturbance caused by this odour, which is affecting large numbers of people.

"We are carrying out a full investigation and will take whatever steps are within our powers to make sure this does not happen again."
